View all 8 comments. Jan 01, Myriad rated it it was amazing Shelves: Therefore I will not judge the quality of the findings and claims of Herman Oldenberg, but I will only express in modest way how I feel after reading it, what I believe I’ve learned and some other aspects that I find important.
However, Oldenberg was sure not to leave the reader alone, and explained every concept in detail, therefore making my read very pleasurable and helping me understand the main ideas. He was writing the book herrmann which he could introduce Buddhism to the general public, and this also made his book very popular at his time, and there is good reason for that.
Book comes well “equipped” with footnotes, explanations, sources and all these elements of well thought and scientific approach to writing. I can never express enough my gratitude for such approach.
Buddha: His Life, His Doctrine, His Order by Hermann Oldenberg, William Hoey – Paperback
In addition to that, for some reason the book left me feeling very calm and somehow “purified”. I attribute this to the way I connected to the concept of the Middle Way. It is buddh peaceful, wisdom-oriented and stands as the opposite to the decadence of the world in which we live today. It is like a poetical insight into the peaceful coexistence of all beings.
I’ll close this review by saying that Bbuddha do recommend this book, but I was not looking for exact science or truth, so I can not speak for the people who know Buddhism in depth.
