I found this one to be a bit of a downer, not just because Hannibal inevitably loses against the Romans it would have to be an alternate history for him not tobut it’s a bit heavy on the gore. With it’s startlingly succinct, almost laconic prose, this novel really has the ‘ugh’ factor; its battle scenes make you squirm every bit as effectively as the biggest-budget Hollywood films achieve with gallons of tomato ketchup liberally spraying the camera-lens.
