In all honesty, I think that graffiti would be better even without pre-fab art. Allowing people more freedom in their use of paint is worth the risk of someone drawing a no-no which I think that the ultimate decision on the last time graffiti was mentioned, which I think was on the notes thread, correct me if I’m wrong.
Sure, notes have that potential as well, but at least those aren’t plastered on the side of a building you can’t choose not to see like a note. Yeah but what if people just move assets around to look phallic? Like, drop a bunch of bars of chocolate to make one, or smear their own blood decals on walls.
If people want to make profane things, they’ll always find a way. The quantity and “quality” of said profane expressions is greatly correlated to the methods required to produce them. Rust for example is very well known for being associated with the “art” its community comes up with, and it isn’t in a positive way. No other game is known for that type of thing from simply being able to place objects on the ground.
That’s the main issue, the devs don’t want that kind of association to their game. That extra layer would act as a barrier to entry for the majority. I do understand the point, and it’s likely safe to assume the decision to use pre-fabbed spray paint patterns is finalized by now. Even though making pre-fab patterns won’t block out all of the issue, it will reduce spamming of inappropriate images all over the map, and hopefully lead to a slightly less inappropriate community.
However, I’m hopeful that the modding community will pick up a less restrictive spray paint mod pretty early on, as well as the removal of other restrictions on mechanics.
Oh even pre-fab decals still aren’t confirmed, I’m just explaining the devs’ reasoning for not wanting free-form painting.
Idk if they’ll consider it eventually or not, though it has been noted that decals in general aren’t all that optimal on UE4. A bit conversion of the game later and it still stutters like a bad case of malapropism when any more than 15 people are gibbed and splatter at once. Ok, if you let people freely graffiti, they’re will be stupid yet hilarious things because people are dumb when they have no sense of consequence.
Have you seen what Rust players draw with the signs they can make?

They’re usually full of hilariously stupid things and I think that won’t fit the game. Well, of course, but you’ll also get artists as well as communities making their own unique “flag” marks on their territories, and you’ll also get better and more notable marks on houses tagged for looting or tagged already looted.
Personally, I will always oppose any action that limits player freedom and creativity for one group of people because an entirely different group of people use that freedom and creativity to replicate organs. Well you could make it super difficult to paint. Something that would curtail offensive posting and turn it into something useful. You could have templates setup where the user simply enters their username. You could implement some basic “bandit” tags and such.
You could even do user submitted so the devs don’t have to waste time but simply “approve” solid submissions.
This would get the community involved and also make for some great role playing and fun in game. Not to mention other aspects like painting in the winter, yea right!
Or the fact most spray paint cans wouldn’t even work after a couple years of sitting on the shelves Few ways to curtail the Rust like weeners all over the place. What do you mean about the UK, qus my town the locals totally didn’t spay profanity over a Cuyen piece. Okay but what if spray painting was just tedious to do?
Let’s face it, even with preset decals people are still gonna make cocks. Say every five seconds you have to shake your mouse like it’s a can of spraypaint and eventually it does run out.
Also if you spraypaint in a closed area you could get the fumes vad you, making you get kind of high and maybe eventually it starts poisoning you. And also without spraypaint people will still make cocks by dropping two cabbages and a broom next to each other. It’s an unavoidable part of life. It happened in Skyrim fjle it will happen here. I think there’s still some confusion about the reason why the devs don’t wan’t it. Nobody upon hearing PUBG for example thinks, “oh yeah, that’s the game where you can place individual pieces of ammo on the ground in the shape of a dick”, that doesn’t happen.
I’m not sure if the concern is well founded though. I don’t think Dead Matter would be known for its spray paint dicks, just as Minecraft isn’t known for its dirt dicks. I qha your, as well as the devs’, points, and I know it’s not being added in base game. At least Dev Squad’s allowing modding!
IMO making it hard would encourage people to draw genitals as it’s quick and easy. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment.
